3. Break-Even & Expense Sensitivity Analysis

8% Flat vs. Itemized Deductions

When does tracking and substantiating receipts for Itemized Deductions actually save you more money than the simple 8% Flat Tax?

Break-Even: 78.5%
0% Expenses (High Profit) Break-Even Expense Threshold 100% Margin (Thin Profit)
Calculated Break-Even Point: ₱ 1,570,000
Required Expense Ratio: 78.5% of sales

If your substantiated deductible expenses exceed this threshold, Itemized Deductions becomes more profitable than 8%.

5. Regulatory Traps & Compliance Protocols

The Q1 Election Irrevocability Trap

The 8% Flat Tax option must be signified in your 1st Quarter Return (BIR Form 1701Q). Failure to check the 8% box on Q1 irrevocably locks you into Graduated Rates for the entire calendar year.

The ₱250k Mixed-Income Exclusion

Under RR 8-2018 (Sec. 3(B)(2)), mixed-income earners electing 8% cannot deduct ₱250,000 from business income because the zero-bracket deduction is already granted to their compensation income.

Ease of Paying Taxes (EOPT - RA 11976)

Invoices are now uniform across both sales of goods and services (Official Receipts are secondary). Micro taxpayers (< ₱3M) also benefit from streamlined civil penalties and simplified compliance.

BIR Form 2307 CWT Reconciliation

Withholding tax certificates (2307) directly offset your Income Tax due, but do NOT offset 3% Percentage Tax or VAT. Ensure quarterly SAWT alphalists are properly attached via eAFS.

6. Statutory Deadlines & Tax Form Schedule

Keep your business in good standing with the BIR by tracking these statutory deadlines:

Q1
BIR Form 1701Q (1st Quarter Income Tax) — Deadline: May 15
Critical deadline to signify your 8% election or lock into graduated rates.
Q2
BIR Form 1701Q (2nd Quarter Income Tax) — Deadline: August 15
Cumulative reporting of gross sales and tax credits for the 1st half of the year.
Q3
BIR Form 1701Q (3rd Quarter Income Tax) — Deadline: November 15
Third quarter cumulative return filing and quarterly tax remittance.
PT
BIR Form 2551Q (Quarterly Percentage Tax) — 25 days after each quarter
Required for Non-VAT taxpayers under OSD, Itemized Deductions, and BMBE. Exempt under the 8% Flat Tax regime.
VAT
BIR Form 2550Q (Quarterly VAT Return) — 25 days after each quarter (+SLSP)
Mandatory for VAT-registered taxpayers (sales ≥ ₱3.0M or voluntary election). Offsets Output VAT with Creditable Input VAT. Requires quarterly electronic submission of Summary List of Sales and Purchases (SLSP) via eBIRForms/eAFS.
YR
Annual Income Tax Return (BIR Form 1701 / 1701A) — Deadline: April 15
